4. Fields of  Interest

A central area of interest for me has always been logic (both mathematical and philosophical). But that has taken me into many other areas including the philosophy of mathematics, metaphysics, epistemology, the philosophy of language and the philosophy of science.  I have an active interest in Asian philosophy, especially Buddhist philosophy, and a lively interest in the history of philosophy (both East and West). Over the last few years I have been actively working on socio-political philosophy. In truth, nowadays there are few areas of philosophy that do not interest me.

5.  Teaching

I have taught (lectured or tutored) in nearly all branches of philosophy at a first-year level. I have taught the following subjects at a more advanced level: philosophical logic; philosophy of language;   mathematical   logic;   history  and  philosophy  of  science;   philosophy   of   religion; metaphysics; philosophy of mind; feminism; political philosophy; cognitive science; Asian philosophy; Buddhist philosophy; the history of philosophy. I have supervised honours and post-graduate students in a number of the above areas. (At the last count, I have been the prime supervisor of 27 successful PhD students.) I have been  active  in  setting  up  a  number  of  new  courses,  as  well  as  the  whole   teaching programmes in Cognitive Science at the Universities of Western Australia and Queensland.  Apart  from my regular jobs, I have taught courses at universities in China, Japan, India, Korea, Sweden, German,  Italy, and Costa Rica.

6.  Service to the University

I have had several terms as head of Department (or Head of School) at the University of Queensland and the University of Melbourne.  I was the coordinator of the Cognitive Science Programme at the University of Queensland for two years. Over the years, I have sat on many university and departmental boards and committees including:  Faculty and Professorial Boards, University Academic Board, Promotion Committees, Small Grants Committees, Faculty Executives, Admissions Committees, Departmental Executives and Admissions Committees, and  numerous  ad   hoc committees.
